About Us

Rwanda Publishers and Booksellers Union is the umbrella body for book publishers and Booksellers in Rwanda. The union Promotes and advocates for the interests of Book Publishing and book chain in Rwanda and beyond. Apart from advocacy and promotion of Book Industry, it also promotes the reading culture and help in formulation and establishment of  Book Policies in the interest of the growing the young but dynamic publishing industry in Rwanda.

 

RPBU Strategies

RPBU’s strategic objectives are transferred into five mid-term strategies:

Strategy 1: Promotion of the RPBU and the interest of its members

  • Align and synchronize objectives with the global vision of the Government of Rwanda

  • Work in partnership with public institutions, bi-multilateral organizations, NGOs and be considered as a natural partner for them

  • Work in partnership with private sector organizations and be considered as a represent for the book industry

  • Guarantee organizational and activity budget;

 

Strategy 2: Defending interest of book industry in Rwanda

  • Promote the book industry as part of the overall development policy

    • Advocate for the existence of a national book policy

    • Advocate for revision of the textbook policy to suit the current trends.

  • Promote the book industry as priority sector for education and training of human resources

  • Guarantee tax exemptions of books, printed material and all other forms of reading supports

  • Be an active stakeholder in promotion of tax exemptions on all teaching supports and materials

  • The promotion of publishing

  • The promotion of bookselling

  • Awareness of freedom of press and liberated circulation of books and printed material in  all its forms

 

Strategy 3: Develop Publisher and Bookseller Standards

  • Develop professional publisher standards for Rwanda

  • Develop professional bookseller standards for Rwanda

  • Get approved bookseller and publisher standard as a professional label

  • Obtain an official classification at Private Sector Federation and Government of Rwanda

  • Develop trade conditions between RPBU members

  • Participate in development of laws related to publishing and book selling vis-à-vis regulator (I.e. Rwandan Governance Board-RGB)

  • Develop guidelines for tendering and institutional buyers

 

Strategy 4: Connect to international publishers and booksellers network

  • To connect RPBU to existing international publishers and booksellers organizations

  • To be an active partner of these organizations

 

Strategy 5: Promotional activities

  • Be a stakeholder in developing activities like

  • Book exhibitions

  • Book launches

  • Book promotions

  • Fundraising for specific activities

  • To connect Rwanda to international book organizations and activities

  • To promote the presence of books and other reading supports as part of the regular mass media

  • Develop a website that will be regularly updated with informative information on the publishing and bookselling activities and related campaigns.
